When someone mentions soviet heavy tank youprobably think of well armored tank with sloped armor and a massive Aphe shell with very longreload time.
Soviet heavy tank is-1 is the first vehicleto have first signs of famous soviet sloped angles -that results in random ricochetteswhitch sometimes can save your life -and at the same time tank still hasthe reload speed similar to other low tier tanks.
The reload speed with aced crew is 7.
4 secondsit is quite short becouse the guns caliber is 85mm whitch not so big and smaller shellsare easyer to operate inside the vehicle.
but dont let the caliber fool you, becousethat's enough to achieve decent penetration for tanks battle rating.
it's best aphe shell weights over 9 kilogramsand can reach over 130mm of penetration.
all enemies can be penetrated as long as youshoot their armor at 90 degrees angle, problems can begin when you are overtiered and meettigers or panthers , but even then there will allways be weak spotswhere your shell can enter their tank.
and it doesnt matter if there is nothing to damagebehind that weak spot.
becouse once 164 grams of tnt inside the shelldetonate that will send enough shrapnel to damage everything inside.
When you need that guaranteed penetrationyou can also take APCR shell that has 180mm of penetration from up close, but practiseshowed that there is no point to sacrifice your damage for penetration:at long range apcr looses all its penetrationat while at close range you can easily hit aweak spot with aphe usually ending everything with 1 shot.
starting from is-1 in addition to placingsteel plates under an angle heavy tank line will have have pointy noses , making them look something similar to ships.
This allowed to maximize effective thicknessof armor plates.
frontal plate is the thickest it had to resistthe most damage , than tanks hull gradually expands untill vehicle reaches it's full size.
For players it means two things: as usuallyone good an one bad.
the good thing is that as long as enemy isin front of your tank you have the best protection and you dont need to angle the hull.
the bad thing you cannot angle your hull , becouse that will reduce effective thickness of yourthinner armor plates.
And in addition to that side armor platesare almost vertical, when attacked from side there is no angle and they mostly protectthanks to their thickness whitch is 90 to 100 milimeters.
Turret also has similar thickness as sidearmor and despite closer to edges ricoshettes can happen it's quite big whitch makes iteasy for the opponents to hit a flat part.
And thickness often is not enough to resistenemys shell so turret will be your weakest part when attacked frontally.
The vehicle has 4 crew members.
Driver sits next to his two closest friends- fuel tanks.
But since hull is quite protected they willrarely couse problems.
The problem will be with the rest of the comradestightly sitting in turret whitch as mentioned before is quite weak, and once penetrated-even shells without high explosive filler can do enough damage toget all three of them killed at once sending you to hangar.
So Overall armor is quite thick and can stoprandom shells unnacurately fired from uncomfortable positions, so you dont get penetrated often, but when you do your team can start pressing F to pay respects.
A lot of stalinium armor has negative effecton mobility.
The maximum speed is 42 kilometers per hour, but realistically tank accelerates to 35.
and once you start turning even that speeddrops significantly.
but surprisingly- backwards tank can moveat 16 KPH becouse there are 2 reverese gears whitch is unusual thing for soviets.
That makes it easyer to escape tough situationsthat can accur becouse of your poor manevurability.
relatively small gun allows tank to have -5degrees of guns depression whitch is not too much , but later soviet heavys have even lessso you can count it as an advantage.
Turrets rotation 14 degrees per second, thatsslower than allmost everyone.
and elevation of 25 degrees is enough foryour main gun, and mostly limits the small caliber coaxial machine gun if you shoot planes.
Tank doesnt have any subtile advantages orupgrades, its basically a standart well armored tank.
IN ARCADE is-1 feels great and i would allwayschoose heavy tank instead of a medium here.
Thanks to an increased mobility it's no longerslow to respond to enemy threats.
and becouse markers will let you know wherethose threats are coming from you can meet them with hull facing forward whitch willgive you strong advantage in protection.
speedwise It will still lag behind most mediumtanks but becouse difference is not so significant there is nothing a medium tank can do thatyou wont be able to do with is-1 in arcade, just additionally you are more protected.
Overall i have a mixed feelings about is-1: i would rate it 6 tanks named after greatleader in realistic and 8 heavy more than mediums in arcade tank was easy to play becouse of aphe shellthat one shots everything, plus the reload speed is great – that allows you to shootmore often as you are not punished hard for missing a target.
But the manevurability is poor and that oftenled to feeling that i have no control over the battlefield when the fast enamy tanksspread around the map , and i was mostly reacting to situationthan keeping it under control.
and then good frontal protection becomes quiteuseless as you dont need it when someone is attackingyou from sides , but you can still feel heavy armor limiting your mobility.
so despite it's a good all around heavy tankit was quite uncomfortable to play knowing that you dont have very significant advantagesand mostly play reactively.
